Anthony, Lucy Stone, and others asking for an amendment of the Constitution that shall prohibit the several States from disfanchising any of their citizens on the ground of sex, ca. 1865 (National Archives Identifier: 306684); Petitions and Memorials, 1813 - 1968; Records of the U.S. House of Representatives, 1789 - 2006; Record Group 233; National Archives.

Pioneer suffragist and one of the leaders of the early American womenís rights movement, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on November 12, 1815. Her signature is at the top of this Petition for Universal Suffrage, presented to Congress on January 29, 1866. Signers of this petition included Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and members of the former Womenís Loyal National League, Ernestine Rose, Lucy Stone, and Antoinette Brown Blackwell. This exceptional combination of signatures represents some of the periodís foremost advocates for suffrage and abolition.
