The National Archives and Records Administration's (NARA) Electronic Records Archives (ERA) Program hosted the first Global Digital Format Registry (GDFR) Governance Workshop at the National Archives building in Washington, D.C. on November 14-15, 2007.
The GDFR initiative led by the Harvard University Library (HUL) aims to develop an architecture to support a distributed global registry for file format information. Once deployed, the GDFR will provide services for the centrally-organized collection of format representation information, and the distributed storage, discovery, and delivery of that information. The architecture and software for the GDFR is being developed by Harvard University Library with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Recognizing that administrative, policy, and financial considerations are extremely important for ensuring the viability of the GDFR as a sustainable resource for the wider preservation community, the NARA ERA Program hosted the workshop to initiate identification, discussion, and evaluation of options for a potential, sustainable GDFR governance structure.
The goals for the one and a half day workshop were to help establish the ground work for GDFR governance, gather information about relevant issues of governance practice and approaches; help organizations and individuals to become knowledgeable about the GDFR work to determine their level of commitment going forward; and provide a communications framework for the consideration and recommendation of future work.
