Kansas City, (MO)…At approximately 11:20 a.m. on Friday, August, 28th staff at the National Archives at Kansas City reported smoke in the Archival Stack area. The Kansas City Fire Department responded, along with the General Services Administration, Federal Protective Officers and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). The public and staff were immediately evacuated from the building premises and all occupants were accounted for.

As the National Archives is a Federal building, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms conducted an investigation to determine the cause. The result of the ATF investigation was accidental fire. No archival materials were damaged in the incident.

The building remains closed for the remainder of today and will re-open for regular hours at 8:00 a.m on Saturday, August 29, 2009.

The National Archives at Kansas City is one of 13 facilities nationwide where the public has access to Federal archival records.
