Tim Rives Lecture to Explore Leavenworth Prisoners in Baseball

Kansas City, (MO)…The National Archives at Kansas City will host at 6:30 p.m on Thursday, August 6, Tim Rives, Deputy Director of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, who will present From the Big House to the Big Leagues: The Unlikely Journey of Four Leavenworth Prisoners to the Negro Leagues. A 6:00 p.m. reception will precede the event and attendees are encouraged to view the It’s Big exhibit at the National Archives at Kansas City prior to the presentation.
Rives will detail the experiences of former Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary inmates who eventually went on to play in the Negro National League, by highlighting the Leavenworth Inmate Case Files housed at the archives.
Timothy Rives serves as the Deputy Director of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas. He is a graduate of Wichita State University, and Emporia State University, where he earned an M.A. in American History in 1995. Before joining the Eisenhower Library, he worked as an archivist at the National Archives at Kansas City for over ten years. Tim is an active researcher and writer. His essay “Introducing Archives and Archivists to Teachers (and Vice Versa)” was published by Routledge in May 2009.
The National Archives at Kansas City is one of 13 facilities nationwide where the public has access to Federal archival records. It is home to more than 50,000 cubic feet of historical records dating from the 1820s to the 1990s created or received by nearly 100 Federal agencies. Serving the Central Plains Region, the archives holds records from the states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The facility is located at 400 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, MO 64108. The National Archives at Kansas City is open Tuesday–Saturday 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. for exhibits viewing and Tuesday–Saturday from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. for research.
