National Archives to Celebrate 75th Anniversary

Kansas City, (MO)…Join the National Archives in celebrating its 75th Anniversary on Saturday July 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A special 75th Anniversary cake will be served at 11:30 a.m. Kids of all ages will enjoy taking a scavenger hunt through the “It’s Big” exhibit, pinning the bowtie on the President, making an autograph album, and playing games inspired by the archives. Ararat Shriners Clown Unit will be on-hand to create custom balloon animals and to “clown-around”.

All events are free and open to the public.

11:00 a.m. – KCTV5 meteorologist Kate Horner will be signing her book Brainstorming. Brainstorming is a resource guide for parents to help their children through severe weather by teaching weather basics and offering specific techniques for families to do before, during and after severe weather.

Noon– Local filmmaker and attorney, Terence O’Malley will show clips and answer questions about his latest documentary, Black Hand Strawman: The History of Organized Crime in Kansas City. O’Malley also highlights Kansas City native Nell Donnelly Reed in his book and documentary Nelly Don: A Stitch in Time.

2:00 p.m.Kansas City Star reporter and author, Brian Burnes will be signing his books of regional interest including Walt Disney’s Missouri; Great Plains Originals; Harry S. Truman: His Life and Times and The Ike Files.

Archives and Genealogy Workshops

10:00 a.m. – Introduction to the Archival Research Catalog - Archives staff will explain how to use the Archival Research Catalog for genealogy and historical research.

1:30 p.m. – A History of National Archives – Archives staff will present a history of the National Archives from its official beginning in 1934 with one location to the expansion of the agency that includes 13 regional offices and 13 Presidential libraries, 18 Federal Records Centers, and the Federal Register.

3:00 p.m.Preservation 101 – Archives staff will offer basic preservation introduction and techniques for two dimensional items. Valuations will not be given and repair will not be performed by staff.

The National Archives at Kansas City is one of 13 facilities nationwide where the public has access to Federal archival records. It is home to more than 50,000 cubic feet of historical records dating from the 1820s to the 1990s created or received by nearly 100 Federal agencies. Serving the Central Plains Region, the archives holds records from the states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The facility is located at 400 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, MO 64108. The National Archives at Kansas City is open Tuesday–Saturday 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. for exhibits viewing and Tuesday–Saturday from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. for research.
