National Archives and National World War I Museum Presents Numerous Veterans Day Activities

The National Archives-Central Plains Region is proud to present a variety of activities for the Veterans Day weekend to honor those who have served in defense of our nation. The weekend’s activities are sponsored by a gift from TriWest Healthcare Alliance, Honeywell and a grant from the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund.

Friday, November 7, 1:00PM
Free Event: New U.S. Citizens Naturalization Ceremony

Free and open to the public; reserved seating for new citizens and their guests. Co-sponsored by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Service, U.S District Court for the Western District of Missouri, National Archives and Records Administration-Central Plains Region and the National World War I Museum. This free event will take place in the Museum’s J.C. Nichols Auditorium.

Saturday, November 8, 10:00AM – 5:00PM
Free Event: “Honoring Veterans: History and Memory”
Co-sponsored by the National World War I Museum and the National Archives-Central Plains Region.

  • 10:30AM – Noon. Lectures on “Remembering Your Veteran,” and “Researching Your Veteran’s Military Records.” Presented by retired Brig. Gen. Don Scott, Deputy Librarian of Congress of the Veterans Oral History Project and Trevor K. Plante, Archivist, Textual Reference Services Division of the National Archives, Washington, DC. This free event will take place in the Museum’s J.C. Nichols Auditorium.
  • 1:00PM Keynote speaker. Clifton Truman Daniel, “Remembering My Father and Grandfather.” Daniel, the grandson of President Harry S. Truman and son of WWII overseas correspondent Clifton Daniel, is the author of Growing Up With My Grandfather: Memories of Harry S. Truman. This free event will take place in the Museum’s J.C. Nichols Auditorium.
  • Free all-day activities:
    • History fair with representatives from area archives, libraries, and historical societies available for consultation about your veteran research.
    • Children’s hands-on activities—make your own poppy and patriotic poster.

The Central Plains Region is one of 14 facilities nationwide where the public has access to Federal archival records. It is home to more than 45,000 cubic feet of historical records dating from the 1820s to the 1990s created or received by nearly 100 Federal agencies. The Central Plains Region houses records from the states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The facility is located at 2312 E.
